Dr. Carreón Foundation (DCF) has received a $86,250 grant from Desert Healthcare District & Foundation to fund scholarships to grow and strengthen Coachella Valley’s healthcare workforce.
Desert Healthcare District has supported the DCF’s scholarship program since 2017, initially with mini-grants valued at $5,000 each, and in 2023, a $50,000 grant was awarded. With this year’s grant the District Foundation has awarded a total of approximately $150,000 to DCF’s scholarship programs.
“We continue to grow and provide more financial assistance to more students due to the support of donors and grants like this,” said Dr. Carreón Foundation Executive Director Ricardo Loretta. “We are grateful to be able to provide even more scholarships to support those going into the healthcare field, which has a faster than average growth above all other occupations.”
For over 30 years now, scholarships have been annually awarded and are now available to Mexican, African, Asian, and Native American students pursuing a higher education or attending a trade school. To date, more than $2 million in scholarships to more than 1,000 students have been awarded. Recipients have attended schools locally and across the country, including College of the Desert, CSUSB Palm Desert, University of Southern California, UCLA, MIT, and Harvard University, to name a few.

About Dr. Carreón Foundation
The late Dr. Reynaldo J. Carreón established the Reynaldo J. Carreón M. D. Foundation prior to his death in 1991, to enable Americans of Mexican ancestry to become the best they can through education. Recently, the board expanded the mission to include assistance to all other minority ethnicities, such as Black, Asian, Indian, Native American, etc. The Dr. Carreón Foundation Board of Directors has dedicated its efforts and resources to carry out Dr. Carreón’s vision, which was to help his people “be the greatest Americans possible.” Carreón scholars have attended some 50 colleges and universities throughout the United States.
About Desert Healthcare District
The Desert Healthcare District is a local government agency formed in 1948. Its mission is to achieve optimal health at all stages of life for all District residents.
The District includes more than 400,000 residents and encompasses the entire Coachella Valley. The District and Desert Healthcare Foundation, together, are one of the largest funders in the valley. These funds are used to assist residents — especially the underserved — in accessing vitally needed resources, such as primary and behavioral healthcare.
