Appointment marks a new chapter for the Coachella Valley nonprofit working to ensure LGBTQ+ older adults have access to affirming care, supportive communities, and housing choices.
PALM SPRINGS, CA — Triangle Care Management (TCM), a Coachella Valley nonprofit serving LGBTQ+ individuals who are aging or living with disabilities, has appointed Steven Drew Auerbach as its Founding Executive Director, effective November 1, 2026.
The appointment marks a step in TCM’s growth. Auerbach brings 30 years of executive leadership and international business experience, along with nonprofit leadership and community engagement.
Raised on the East Coast, Auerbach grew up in a family of entrepreneurs, with both of his parents owning their own businesses. His father was a dedicated patient advocate who spent years protecting the rights of individuals injured as a result of medical care. That upbringing shaped his appreciation for entrepreneurship and advocacy.
Auerbach built an international career spanning more than 40 countries in brand development, product innovation, and business consulting. His work included strategic planning and organizational development.
He later brought that experience into the nonprofit sector. Most recently, Auerbach served as Co-Executive Director and COO of the HIV+ Aging Research Project (HARP-PS) in Palm Springs. During his tenure, he helped expand educational programming, strengthen strategic partnerships, increase funding, and broaden community outreach.
He co-founded The Chosen Family Alliance, which supports LGBTQ+ organizations in rural America.
Auerbach holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business/Consumer Studies from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He earned advanced certificates in International Negotiations and Importation from the World Trade Institute at the World Trade Center, and a Writing Certificate from UCLA. A published writer and experienced speaker, he has addressed business audiences in the United States and internationally. NPR has interviewed him about entrepreneurship and social entrepreneurship.
Auerbach lives in Palm Springs with his partner, Michael, and their three dogs, Rocco, Teddi, and Edward. The dogs, he says, effectively run the household.
“Steven brings a valuable combination of executive experience and a genuine commitment to community,” said Kelly Watson, President of Triangle Care Management. “He knows how to turn a vision into action. We are excited to have him build on the work already underway at TCM and help take the organization into its next chapter.”
Building on a Vision. Creating a Stronger Future.
TCM is built around three interconnected areas of support.
Advocacy & Care Management provides personalized assistance at no cost to help individuals navigate healthcare and long-term care decisions. TCM connects people with LGBTQ+-affirming providers and resources to make informed choices.
Community focuses on reducing isolation and helping people build relationships they can count on. Through its Embracing Aging Program, TCM helps older adults create personal care networks and circles of trust. Its first initiative, Lesbians Embracing Aging (LEA), brings women together to plan for the years ahead.
Affirming Housing is TCM’s longer-term commitment to residential options where LGBTQ+ individuals can age with dignity. The vision includes community care residences and other affirming housing models.
“These aren’t separate challenges. Care, community, and housing are deeply connected,” said Watson. “Our goal is to help people find the support they need today while building a future in which LGBTQ+ older adults have more choices and greater security.”
As Executive Director, Auerbach will strengthen TCM’s capacity and expand its community reach. He plans to build on the organization’s work and develop the partnerships and resources needed to bring its broader vision to life.
“Getting older isn’t optional,” Auerbach said. “But growing older without the support, care, and community we deserve shouldn’t be the price we pay. TCM is working to change that. I’m excited to be part of an organization that is not just talking about the challenges, but building practical solutions.”
