Michaels donates $1 million worth of fabric to help crafters make masks to battle COVID-19

Michaels, the arts and crafts retailer with multiple locations throughout Kansas City, said Monday it has donated $1 million worth of fabric – enough to make nearly 750,000 masks – to more than 70 organizations on the front lines of the battle against COVID-19.

Along with the donation, Michaels has step-by-step instructions, templates and products on its website to help create acetate face shields and fabric masks. The company is also calling on all “makers to help create the necessary supplies.”

The acetate sheets, elastic, polyurethane foam strips, fabric and other necessary essentials are in-stock at Michaels stores across the country and available for curbside pick-up or home delivery if purchased via Michaels’ website.

Organizations who have received fabric donations to-date include:

Gifting Brands (who is able to use the material to produce 200,000 masks for first responders at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas)
The Turban Project (whose volunteers have already produced more than 45,000 pieces of headwear and masks)
Touching Little Lives
UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland
St. Luke’s Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania
Arkansas Arts & Fashion Forum (who have already produced nearly 1,000 masks for hospital workers)
Kunz Gloves

Michaels also said it is actively seeking out other organizations that are in immediate need of fabric for their production needs. Fabric donations are being shipped for free through Michaels partnership with UPS.
