Outburst Projects

Outburst Projects are small-format exhibitions that artists create following a month-long artist-residency at Palm Springs Art Museum. The program is designed to support creative exploration, allowing artists to experiment with new bodies of work.

Gabriela Ruiz, a self-taught artist, grew up in Los Angeles’s San Fernando Valley to immigrant parents from Mexico. Her practice embraces a Do-It-Yourself work ethic familiar to her from youth, one which expresses the vibrancy of Mexican cultural and artistic traditions.

Outburst Friends

When the museum asked Gabriela Ruiz if she would like to select an artist to exhibit alongside her in Outburst, she invited not one, but four of her fellow artists: Maria Maea, Clara Nieblas, Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya, and Karla Ekatherine Canseco. Ruiz explains: “We build a home and sense of safety through connections we find in our communities. I wanted to highlight this sense of community.”

Gonzalo Lebrija:
Miracle of the Eternal Present

This exhibition surveys more than two decades of work by Mexican artist Gonzalo Lebrija. Using a wide range of mediums—photography, video, sculpture, and painting—Lebrija reframes familiar objects or activities, sometimes altered only slightly, to imbue them with poetic and symbolic force.Learn More +
