SongShine Foundation received a $10,000 grant from the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation to support the nonprofit’s unique music-based arts in healthcare program. The only program of its kind in the Coachella Valley, SongShine helps people impacted by Parkinson’s and other neurological challenges reclaim their voices.
Founded in 2006, SongShine offers vocal music and creative drama-based classes specifically designed for those with communication difficulties due to neurological conditions or age-related voice decline. Through a holistic, joyful approach that combines singing exercises, physical awareness, breath support, diction and articulation practice, imagination, role-playing, and song, participants experience improvements in voice, communication and self-confidence.
“This grant is so appreciated to help us continue SongShine’s life-changing programs,” said Peter Harris, SongShine Instructor. “Our techniques harness the power of the brain and breath while creating community and building confidence—and we have fun.”
SongShine currently offers two weekly Zoom classes, a weekly in-person class at Sun City Palm Desert, and a Summer Solo class at Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church, which sponsors the facility space. Each year, SongShine produces a musical featuring students who are overcoming neurological challenges and aging voices, a fundraising benefit luncheon, and a Parkinson’s Wellness Expo. The grant will support costs associated with training, productions and high-quality piano accompanists, which all contribute to the results achieved through this specialized therapy.
“SongShine is using the power of music to help individuals reconnect with their voices and one another,” said Catharine Reed, Vice President of Charitable Programs for the H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation.
“SongShine’s approach may seem simple, but its impact is profound,” said Jerry Upham, General Manager of Gulf California Broadcast Company, which owns and operates KESQ News Channel 3.
The Berger Foundation presents Impact Grants through a partnership with News Channel 3. Representatives from both entities look for local 501(c)3 nonprofits to recognize for their outstanding work to improve people’s lives and help those in need. Impact Grants are awarded on the concept that through service, funding, and awareness, we are “Making a Difference Together.” Beyond the funds, each organization also receives media coverage about its mission across a variety of News Channel 3’s platforms, including News Channel 3 News at 4 and kesq.com.
