A Sanctuary of Purpose: Where Rescued Animals Find a lifetime of Care in the Desert – SoCal Mini Horse Sanctuary

Our sanctuary is located at Lost Creek Canyon Ranch in Whitewater, a historic and beautiful property here in the Coachella Valley, and we’ve worked hard to create something that reflects both meaningful animal care and a strong sense of place.

As background, we are a 100% volunteer-run nonprofit dedicated primarily to the rescue and lifelong care of miniature horses. Many of the animals in our care remain with us for life due to age, medical, or behavioral needs, which is at the core of what “sanctuary” means to us.

Over the past several years, we’ve intentionally limited new intakes in order to remain financially responsible and ensure the highest level of care for every animal already depending on us.

We are also proudly accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), reflecting the standards we uphold in both animal care and transparency.

A Sanctuary of Purpose: Where Rescued Animals Find a Lifetime of Care in the Desert

Tucked into the quiet beauty of Southern California’s desert landscape, the So Cal Mini Horse Sanctuary offers something increasingly rare—an unwavering commitment to lifelong animal care rooted in integrity, transparency, and heart.

Located on the historic Lost Creek Canyon Ranch in Whitewater, the sanctuary is set within a landscape that feels both peaceful and deeply restorative—for animals and humans alike.

Founded out of a recognized need for miniature horse rescue in the region, the sanctuary has grown into a trusted and fully accredited nonprofit.

Today, the sanctuary is home to 33 rescued animals, many of whom will remain for the rest of their lives due to age, medical, or emotional considerations.

“That is what sanctuary truly means,” I often say. “They are safe here. They are loved here. And they are never discarded when they need more care.”

With a strong focus on sustainability, we have intentionally limited new intakes in recent years to maintain the highest level of care for each animal.

Transparency is central to our mission. We offer tours and welcome volunteers so people can see firsthand the level of care these animals receive.

In a time when trust matters more than ever, we continue to operate with a clear purpose—to provide lifelong care, dignity, and safety to every animal that comes to us.
