Dr. Carreón Foundation Presented Nearly 60 Scholarships: Awards banquet raises $10,000 to be applied to the 2023 Scholarship Program

The Dr. Carreón Foundation honored 56 students from area high schools across the Coachella Valley and Blythe during its annual awards banquet held at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino. Attracting nearly 200 attendees, the banquet was open for everyone to attend. The primary focus was to honor the recipients and recognize them as they crossed the stage, and $10,000 was raised from the event, in which the funds will be applied to the 2023 Scholarship Program.

Foundation Executive Director Ricardo Loretta emceed the banquet (in both Spanish and English), and among the guest speakers were City of Indio Mayor Waymond Fermon, and Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Edwin Gomez.

The Foundation provides scholarships in various amounts to students with Mexican/Latino ancestry from all Coachella Valley high schools, and Palo Verde High School in Blythe. To apply students need a minimum 3.0 GPA, be involved in bettering their community, and demonstrate leadership skills and financial need.

Scholarships range from $1,500 to $5,000. These funds are raised with the support of local organizations and individuals, along with long-time partner OneFuture Coachella Valley. In its 31 years, the Foundation has awarded almost $2 million in scholarships to over 800 students. Recipients have attended schools locally and across the country including College of the Desert, CSUSB Palm Desert, University of Southern California, UCLA, MIT, and Harvard University, to name a few.

Foundation prior to his death in 1991, to enable Americans of Mexican ancestry to become the best they can through education.
