Tools For Tomorrow’s MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA to Benefit Free Arts Literacy Program in Valley Schools

On February 28, the VISIONARIES of Tools For Tomorrow will honor dynamic philanthropist Sandra C. Woodson with the “Vision for the Future” Award.  Chaired by Claire Smith, Irma Smith and C.J. Westrick-Bomar, the MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA Dinner Show will feature the “new” Great American Songbook sung by Terri Olsen and Frank DiSalvo accompanied by The Perfect Blend Band. A 5 p.m. reception and silent auction will precede a 3-course wine dinner and entertainment at Agua Caliente Resort and Casino in Rancho Mirage.  Tickets are $200 and proceeds benefit Tools for Tomorrow’s integrated music, drama, creative writing and art after-school program for third to fifth graders in schools throughout the Coachella Valley.

Program Director David Hirsch reported that in its 23rd year, Tools For Tomorrow has adapted to Covid restrictions by training teachers to offer the arts literacy program online to students from 24 different CV schools and providing each child their own Art Kit to use at home.  Desert Sands Unified School District Supervisor Expanded Learning Programs Jaime Bikis said, “Now more than ever students need a creative outlet to express themselves through hands on activities that support their social and emotional well-being.”

Indio’s Herbert Hoover Elementary School Principal Karen Schibler thanked Tools For Tomorrow for enabling students in a socio-economically disadvantaged area to learn a joy for the arts — “Students are producing art and developing new skills. We saw a huge increase in participation from the first class offered in the fall to our signups in the spring.”

Research shows that participation in regular arts education can bolster self-confidence, academic performance and coping skills. Parents expressed their gratitude for the Tools For Tomorrow program:

“Thanks so much for giving her an outlet and helping her through all this — she loves drawing so much!” – Jamie M.

“Annabella looked forward to every Thursday and couldn’t wait to learn more on how to express herself creatively!” – Yvonne R.
